downtown renton washington, 2006.
hah not that i wouldn’t have expected it, given where i was (downtown renton washington). i was walking by what apparently was a reception of some sort i found out, and this lady (in her 50’s it looked like) had hollered to an old guy, who ignored her. she then said something to me, about him not listening, and smiled…she was in a “perfect” spot (and looked the part) for a holga portrait. i motioned to take a shot, and things switched — she got a bit irate (more than a rational person would have…in retrospect, they *had* to have been drunk), kept asking me “why would you want to take my picture”…friends(?) of hers to the side, started to further the commotion by trying to confront her about something or another, as i tried to break through to see if she really wanted to know my reason…after i asked if they really wanted to hear the reason (i had one, they were standing next to a window with reflection just so…sorry, i’m like that…either i *like* to stir stuff up, or its that i’m kinda big on closure :) — they said no, and, i quote, as much as possible “i lost my engagement ring, and i don’t like niggers…”
lol wow. who knew. given the scenery (antique shops, the clothing of the folk i was surrounded by), i thought i’d stepped into a time warp.
wifey and i got an Odd Racist Radar Feeling driving around another spot there in downtown renton, and from this little episode, it may have been warranted :)
