I had some problems with the Google Desktop beta, but an uninstall cleared it up. (I have yet to reinstall it. I'll probably wait until it's out of beta.) I've also been playing with the Google feed reader recently (http://www.google.com/reader). That app has some serious problems. I'll stick with NewsGator for now. However, given our "geographic diversity", I'm probably connecting to an entirely different set of Gmail servers than you are.
