Holga 35 AFX – it’s ok

howelloutside0

uploaded from flickr.

I am nearly sure that the Holga 35AFX is not as “ooh ah” as the 120MF. My first roll of 24 had only about 6 pictures that came out–which actually would have been more, but Sams Club chose to not develop a significan number of pictures i had taken inside of the store (the pictures were not there but the negatives were–this was the second time a sams/walmart has done this, the first time a random picture of a coworker was removed/never developed from my roll).

I got my second and third developed at Ritz (Cameras West in Tukwila). All the pics came out just fine. I did take time to tape the camera up a bit in the front and back on each roll (re-taping on reloading), although i don’t think there’s as much light-leak as the 120 has.

I thought the photos looked pretty plain, as in something I could have taken with a disposable, but with the exception of the one in this post, the others in the flickr set are untouched. they feel a bit better after scanning.

i’m going to take some time to rig this to take square pics, and remove much of the taping on a roll to see how it turns out…then all i need is another beautiful day like today was to shoot. :)

KKK App

some lunchtime reading here (before i step out for a few minutes to snap on the Holga!)

in the 20′s the criteria for a KKK applicant was:

“…white, male Gentile person of temperate habits, sound in mind and a believer in the tenets of the Christian religion, the maintenance of White Supremacy and the principles of pure Americanism”

the moment we begin to confuse Christ’s ideals with “the American Way”, we fall down a slippery slope.

very interesting article from my hometown newspaper, no less, by way of Negrophile.

what’s been going on?

mainly waiting with baited breath for my Holga to arrive (it’s a 35mm AF so sue me emma).

working like a nut on a work project, learning a ton, but yesterday was a bear.

had a wonderful Easter Weekend; in telling the story of the passover, the blood, the Lamb, and His blood, to my kids, i was wowed once again on how great an artist Yahweh is. so fresh. I’ve heard his name mentioned as “I Will Be” (cf. “I Am”) , and it makes a lot of sense.

had dinner at the floyd’s fresh mansion. i gotta throw up a pic of the drained lake. straight out of mordor. slept longer than we have in about 6 months, probably a year. we gotta do that one again.

common knowledge-coke, nazis, and automata

while doing some human spidering on the web i came across a most interesting image:

coca cola

i hadn’t realized coke did such heavy marketing during WWII to the Germans.

actually, there’s apparently lots of information about Coke’s involvement during the war, both in the US and in Nazi Germany.

i guess this was “common knowlege”, but it’s the first i’ve heard of it.

recently, Coke’s come under fire for some new swastika action.

of course the stigma of the swastika is because of the Nazis use of it, less because of any evil associated with the symbol itself. but of course i think you’d hafta be ignorant to not know that now commonly its known for its association with the Nazis, and you should probably be careful if you’re flexing it.

Man, during a meeting at work today, i can’t even remember what we were talking about, but he doodled on a paper, and said “DFA…doesn’t this remind you of DFA?” then mentioned “Automata?” First off, i’m a tad relieved that there’s someone else i’m working with who has taken a course or so in automata, but it also reminds me that the *only* thing i could bring up in my head is that there existed DFA and NFA. One of those “I’ve been meaning to”s is I’ve been meaning to crack open my automata book again and read it. Thanks to his comment he’s gotten me at least thinking about it again, and i’ve pulled out my dusty book to get cracking again on this, to become reacquainted with this “common knowledge” among developers. sheesh.

more reference on the swastika symbol itself (from a buddhist website).

Oh My Buddy I hope you are well

my little buddy went to spend the night at a friends last evening. It was kinda sad, since I can’t remember the last time he spent the night somewhere (is it his first?) I hope he’s doing well. I’m not on some neurotic call over their house deal, but he’s 3, and still trying to get potty trained–i hope he did well.

see you soon jaden. i love you.

Day in the life – 3/21/2005

a day in the life – 3/21/2005 ended up pretty well, issues with photographing people notwithstanding.

Here’s a short blurb to piggyback on my yesterday’s rant about people not wanting to be photographed.

A co-worker was asking me to perhaps come and take some pictures of something they’re involved in. They said something to the extent of “you have a knack for filtering out unflattering photos–you know how to make people look their best”. That’s *exactly* my intent when i photograph adults.

You don’t have to be attractive, but I know enough about how *i* would want to be portrayed that i don’t intend on sharing something that’s unflattering. Granted, sometimes my choices are a bit more “liberal” than my subjects. Many times subjects are far to hard on themselves.

So i really appreciated the comment, because i think she *really* understood me, and my intent with photographing people. Thanks for the compliment, it encouraged me greatly.

It’s not that i’m trying to be dishonest with my photos, but, like in real life, i’m trying to treat folk with some respect.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun. I’m not sure if i’ll approach it the next time i participate (i.e. toting big D70 to work). i may go a little simpler and just use a cameraphone :)

does (good) design matter? duh! it doesn’t..

from

http://www.fiftyfoureleven.com/resources/design/design-matters#L-344

from the notes:

design does matter, but only for people who like a challenge; only for people who aren’t satisfied with cruising by on the bare minimum; only for perfectionists, in other words

Perhaps those who are realizing this are either young, and/or not listening to those with experience. In pretty much *every* vocation, we realize that being “good enough” cuts it most of the time. design doesn’t matter at all, if you want to get your point across right then, or make some dough in the immediate…

however, when it comes to standing the test of time, it absolutely *does* matter.

and it’s here where i point to one of my favorite essays of all time: taste for makers.

of course i’m armchairing here; i must have missed something else they were trying to get across.

day in the life photo shoot

i’m doing the day in the life shoot today for the flickr group.

i remember about 8 years ago how easy it was for me to shoot candids of complete strangers, and they be okay by it.

nowdays everyone seems freaked out about having their photo taken.

maybe i look scarier nowdays.

maybe these are scarier times….or people just scarier these days.

i’m just as un-scared as i can remember, though…

i’m very selective now though about the strangers i approach, ‘cos many folk are just onery these days.

i’m no longer allowed to love flickr

now that they’ve been acquired by a mega-corp. (can’t believe i didn’t catch this yesterday afternoon).

on the other hand, yahoo! has always been good to me…they’ve managed to, in my view, stay themselves, even when expanding. they seem like the Rich Cool Uncle, as opposed to the Rich Uncle who Came Into Money and now Behaves Like a Jerk (can you say goooo…uhahem).

as long as the API stays OPEN and free, i’ll be a happy camper.

the only thing that truly bothers me is that now there will be a higher noise ratio to deal with. if it becomes like mysp*@$e i will run for the hills screaming.

so i guess for now, it is still always and foreverrrr….
