Note to flickr — I’d love a personal edition

Flickr – *please* tell me that you guys plan to create a Flickr
personal edition. I love the community aspect–and even purchased a subscription (your monthly limits–genius–i couldn’t help but get one!)

*however* — i incorporate my photos with my blog, and the purpose of my blog is a personal journal, so that when i die, my family will have this as my datebook/history. That being said, there’s something to be said for the security i have with handling everything on my own server, and being able to archive when i please periodically. Not saying you guys will go out of business (i wish the absolute best! :) but i love keeping things in house, and since obviously you guys have the best gallery technology, i really want to see an edition that will allow us to store on our own servers, as well as still tie in to the community features that make Flickr worthwhile.

Thanks so much for listening, and looking forward to any announcements. Let me know when you guys speak in the area (i’m in/around Seattle).

i would hate to have to stop using flickr–there’s just something inherently bothersome about hosting my personal archives on a site owned by an entity other than myself. so please come quickly flickr personal.

I don’t like that idea for one reason – and that is if people can use their own host instead of Flickr’s, then when I go to Flickr and look at pictures, I’m not going to be able to see all of them due to others’ server maintanance, bandwidth issues, etc. It will make Flickr a broken image extravaganza

    good point.

what i was thinking about (i should have elaborated) was a way to keep the pics synched–i really don’t mind if flickr hosts a copy of the image; i guess what i’m looking at even, is not necessarilly full-blown flickr to host for myself, but perhaps something light, that will keep my images locally (as well as on the server) and allow my images to be searched in the best ways that flickr does (sets, by date taken, click to display exif info, etc), and not lose the community features of flickr (and prevent the broken image fiasco)

kinda like IMAP for pictures (there’s a search term :)

i’m sure there’s a way to keep it all integrated… similar to how blogger can power blogs off of their own site…

  • http://www.smartbrother.org jon

i’m not familiar with blogger–there are actually blogger blogs that don’t run on blogger, yet are integrated into the blogger blogosphere?

    :D

    ah dope!

i wonder if they are hosted off-site from blogger, or just have their own URLs going there? or have blogger host the domain (do they have something like that)?

in other news–YIKES WHERE HAS SCISSORKICK BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!

i’d be happy to just have them mail me a dvd of my photos ever month. kind of like netflix.

  • http://drewish.com andrew morton

    make that every month.

hmmm…this is true. as long as its laid out in a visually pleasing, easy to navigate format, i’m cool.

i already have all of my pics in iphoto; i’d love to keep a nice presentation of everything however, so that there’s one easy in to my “life story”, just click “install”…but perhaps where would the fun be in that?

thanks for the link–the “extras” that enamors me about flickr are the social aspect, and RSS feeds.

    plus a cracking UI.

i’m gonna play w/ fotoflix at some point however just to try it out.
