We have about 50 sites on Dreamhost and this is the first time we've encountered bad_httpd_conf. They did fix it fast, but now should I check the othe 49 sites? What causes this error?

this happens quite a bit.

enough that if you put in a support request, it's one of the dropdowns.

they take care of it pretty quickly.

aha! So I'm not the only one getting this error!

What is up with that? Dreamhost sure does seem to have a lot more... "quirks" than they used to.

Is there a better host out there for the same price?

You know what--I did too, after the "bad_httpd_conf" error was actually eliminated, yet the site came up with just a directory listing! what a day.

And it happened. Ended up being a little worse because it took a few iterations to get the sites (smartbrother.org and gallery.smartbrother.org) functioning properly. Obviously we're back up. Wish i had more word on the root cause of Dreamhost's constant "bad_httpd_conf" issue when moving/setting up a site.
