Watch Night Service — I Learn Something New Everyday

I had mentioned in passing to some of my friends about how a friend of mine was borrowing equipment because he was djing this New Years Eve joint with his church…and how growing up we always had something New Years Eve with the church I was a part of (mainly because the folk whom we fellowship with here have no such thing)…come to find out that this isn’t common across the whole of Christianity, but common among “Black Churches”, with a historical precedent! I’m glad I learned this, and will be doing a little more research:

Watch Night Service

My watch night for work is over now…back to the grind tomorrow…Good night!

I wonder why my lily white church in Missouri always had Watch Night service then… ?

What a cool tradition! The service we went to was just a typical New Year’s Eve service which they lamely tried to make liturgical by calling it “The Eve of the Name of Jesus” service. But ’twas a good service, so I can’t complain too much…

Just because its more common among “Black Churches” wouldn’t necessarily mean its exclusive, I presume.

Leslie grew up in an Assemblies of God church, I think, as did I. We always had “Watch Night Services” too. The history of the Assemblies of God, the Church of God and the COG in Christ are linked historically to the the Pentecostal Revival in the US. I’m sure a lot of the practices and traditions are co-mingled in those denominations.
