Sidetrack is HERE!

A few weeks back I downloaded the Greatest Utility for my iBook — Raging Menace’s Sidetrack, version 0.9. Unfortunately, It was to expire sometime in mid-late November. I wrote the author, and he promptly wrote back, assuring me that the 1.0 version will be available. IT IS AVAILABLE! This little joint does everything the iBook’s trackpad should have done in the first place, and everything a PC laptop user is used to taking for granted.

peep the game. This will be the best 15$ any rational iBook user has spent on a piece of software.

Life, Life without Music I Can’t Go…

Last evening was a good remedy for the blahs.

I had a lot of fun spinning. Honestly, this is the first college crowd I’ve done in a long time (I usually do sets with my peers (self-proclaimed “true-schoolers”), I’m spinning between sets, or I’m doing a show of songs that we wrote ourselves).

Given the mix of people there (large chunk of latinos/latinas, Mesztisos/as (i just wanted to say that lol) and black folk, and of course some white people :), and the fact they came from all over the country, it was fun and challenging mixing. I played more bounce music than I ever have in my life in a set–It’s much easier for me to play nowdays though, because a lot of it is quite moving. Did some dancehall, did a bit of salsa–one girl walked up with some CDs in her back pocket for me to play (one reason i *love* having the CDJs [frank language])

Highlights:
1) mixing Zapp’s “More Bounce to the Ounce” with Eric B. & Rakim’s “Don’t Sweat the Technique”, then bringing Rakim back to the break, and looping them both for about 2 minutes. Crowd was definitely feeling it, and I wish my minidisk worked so i could have recorded it.

2) and my favorite mix of the evening was the juxtaposition of Biggie Small’s “Hypnotize” instrumental mixed with Listener‘s “The Moon Cries Out”. Listener i got to let you hear it–it’s on key and *everything*.

I knew i threw the young crowd off when (in honor of Hip Hop History Month) i threw on the Beat Box Boy’s “Yum Yum”…they danced still though. :)

November Third: Matt Taibbi Asks What’s the Democrats’ Alternative to God? [my first and hopefully last political post]

November Third: Matt Taibbi Asks What’s the Democrats’ Alternative to God?

Nice article.

I think one of the biggest problems with both ends of the political spectrum (when set up as the straw men they often are) are that they each miss the point.

The “Republicans” want a “simple path to heaven”. That ain’t gonna happen. the world is screwed up, and we’re living in it.

The “Democrats” want to look for an “alternative to God” but the biggest problem is that you can’t have true love and community without looking outside of your self.

where’s the the choice for those of us who are “in the middle”? I’m one of the strugglers in this world of garbage, but i’m doing it *with* my eye toward heaven. I’m one of those who know that sometimes there aren’t cut and dry answers to many “issues” — well actually there is a cut and dry answer (“trust in Him”), but that answer practically means wallowing through a bunch of crap to get to the truth.

i was, and am with my boy glenn kaiser on this one.

A Zombie Kind of Day

Ew.

I took a sick day yesterday, i mean really took it. Today i’m apparently still recovering. Actually i’m sure that’s not my excuse.

I’m doing stuff, but definitely not as focused as i could be. i feel like a zombie. difficult to get anything started, difficult when started to stay on a single task, and just really not wanting to be here today (or anywhere, for that matter).

I’m thankful that i’m spinning tonight. when i get in front of those turntables in front of the crowd, and drop the first beat–i’m outta here.

It is Hip Hop History Month, Remember?

Just wanted to remind those who may not be in the know–November is Hip Hop History Month. Let’s take a second to honor a piece of many of our existences that I personally could not imagine living without.

okay done.

One good flick to see, is Beef II. I have not seen the first one, but this one has got me hunting for it. It’s a flick about what it says–”Beef”–static–conflict–between various “sects” of hip hop. How it started, and, thankfully much of the time, how it was squashed (ended).

I’m hoping to find the first one of this flick. It was good stuff–covering from the Roxanne Shante battles all the way up to D12/Eminem and Royce tha 5’9 Beef.

Those outside of the culture–pick it up if not only to get an outside view not presented fully through the traditional media outlets. While the Beef itself seems to always get the play…the squashing of beef is rarely portrayed. Even though it highlights many pieces of the culture that I’m not even favorable to–it’s all worth checking out. Probably two of the most interesting pieces is the Beef between Nelly and KRS-One, and the postscript to Roxanne Shante’s legend and rap career.

How To Go From Corporate to Gully in Ten Minutes.

1) get a 16 oz coffee, very sugary and latte’d out.
2) come upstairs
3) somehow have the top pop off and burst all onto desk (leave about about 1″ of coffee in the cup)
4) take 5 trips to dry, and clean, and remove papers from desk.
5) say “forget it” don’t go down and give sob story about coffee, put away the little treat that was with it, go into the refrigerator, and pull out fried chicken and (the equivalent of) kool-aid, with bread, for breakfast.

chicken chicken chicken i’m a finger lickin’ winner.

this is better than any pastry could have been.
