Life, Life without Music I Can’t Go…

Last evening was a good remedy for the blahs.

I had a lot of fun spinning. Honestly, this is the first college crowd I’ve done in a long time (I usually do sets with my peers (self-proclaimed “true-schoolers”), I’m spinning between sets, or I’m doing a show of songs that we wrote ourselves).

Given the mix of people there (large chunk of latinos/latinas, Mesztisos/as (i just wanted to say that lol) and black folk, and of course some white people :), and the fact they came from all over the country, it was fun and challenging mixing. I played more bounce music than I ever have in my life in a set–It’s much easier for me to play nowdays though, because a lot of it is quite moving. Did some dancehall, did a bit of salsa–one girl walked up with some CDs in her back pocket for me to play (one reason i *love* having the CDJs [frank language])

Highlights:
1) mixing Zapp’s “More Bounce to the Ounce” with Eric B. & Rakim’s “Don’t Sweat the Technique”, then bringing Rakim back to the break, and looping them both for about 2 minutes. Crowd was definitely feeling it, and I wish my minidisk worked so i could have recorded it.

2) and my favorite mix of the evening was the juxtaposition of Biggie Small’s “Hypnotize” instrumental mixed with Listener‘s “The Moon Cries Out”. Listener i got to let you hear it–it’s on key and *everything*.

I knew i threw the young crowd off when (in honor of Hip Hop History Month) i threw on the Beat Box Boy’s “Yum Yum”…they danced still though. :)
