HP Pavilion ze5385us tri-boot

To let anyone know, i’m successfully tri-booting my new laptop between Linux (RH9) Win2k server, and windows XP Home. i won’t go into details, but just so you know and have any questions about it, hit me up…

basically i have the win2k & XP home on the same partition; used a software called Change of Address to keep all my XP apps in a directory C:\appsXP, as well as changed a registry entry in my XP so that all new software gets installed in C:\appsXP, then installed Win2k Server afterwards, which in effect destroyed my booting into XP home so i had to reinstall XP home, but i just did a “repair” of the current installation, and voila–tri boot :)

the OS’s successfully share development tools i keep in my C:\dev dir. (eclipse, java SDK).

so to get into my windows OS’, Grub menu takes me there (where i choose between linux partition and “windows OS” partition as i named it), and the windows boot sequence lets me select between XP and win2k.

fun fun! so far so good.

why win2k too? i basically needed win2k server on this mug to run a full Blue Martini installation for my consulting joint.

the main frustration i have is that if/when you install XP Home again on your laptop from scratch (as opposed to using the destructive “system recovery disks” HP provides), you lose a bit of functionality and have to go hunting for drivers. it’s a pain, but at least now i have them all in one place should i need to do it again.

    Hi Jon,

Could you solve the hardware (cd/dvd-rom, floppy, etc) and shut-down problems in RH9? Also, I replaced the old XF86Config file with yours, touchpad mouse works fine but still without the scrool wheel. :(

    Thanks,
    Menal.

good to see you got X going!

i don't have any shut down problems to speak of, but haven't had time to work on the CDROM/floppy issues. apparently it's *got* to work--i got it installed off CD ROM, right :) i'm sure it's more of a kudzu (or module..dunno if they're the same or what) problem than a driver problem, and my next step is to custom compile a kernel with non-module CDROM support and manually attempt to mount the drive using

    mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

(after creating the device--can't remember if there's a MAKEDEV type script for linux in /dev or not w/out looking...)

that's my plan of attack at least...

  • hey Jon,

i have a HP ze5362ea, i think pretty much built of the same components.

what interests me is if you could set up your modem under Linux, which is an ALi (Conexant chipset) AC-Link modem.

i have found this link to linuxant and experienced with their hsf drivers under my mandrake 9.1 (2.4.21-13) but no success so far, start to give up hope...

if you could set up your modem (is it the same), what drivers did you use in your RH9.

    thx a lot!

    cheers,
    ;-p

I am trying to find modem drivers for my HP Pavilion ze5300 and I can't find them. DO you know where I can find them? I went to Hp's site and the ze5300 is not listed there...

I had an unsuccessful experience loading Linux onto my new HP 5375. Specifically, I couldn't get Linux to recognized the USB ports and I couldn't find resources to configure the 802.11b nic. Could you refer me to some tech docs to complete the install? I'm looking to dual boot between XP and Linux.

    Thanks in advance,

    Marc

if you haven't, make sure you check out one of the other posts on this site about the subject. as it stands, i've been on a contract, and haven't gotten a chance to get back to messing around with the linux portion of my laptop. maybe that other post will help?

For some odd reason, upon installing RH9, the system locks up when it trys to install the ohci1394 driver. Did you come across that and if you did, how did you get around it?

    Thanks,
    Tim

  • Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for the info on the dual boot issues with linux. I wanted to share some information that I have recently stumbled upon while cleaning the notebook. I took it apart for the first time to clean the fans/heatsink. I was amazed to find that the ze5300 series use socketed northwoods! I already have ordered a P4 3.06 to install in my ze5365us. Also I found that the ze5300 does not use the ati flex fit card either, it is totally integrated onto the mainboard. Of coarse if you didnt get a dvd-r on your ze you could easily add one... Just thought youd like the info... I am posting instructions on how to take apart, clean, and re-assemble the entire notebook. I took some nice step by step photos, and some great HQ pics of the mainboard and chip socket.

    Hi, J.

I succeeded in installing RH9, but it crashes every time I try to boot it up, during the 'new hardware' check. Would you know how can I disable this check?
  • Daniel
By the way, my comp. is a HP pavilion ze5600...
  • jonmadison
hey daniel--first off, you may want to just use Fedora, since redhat will not be supported after 9. at any rate, you should be able to hit "I" for interactive start up, and load up each driver individually until you find out where it's crashing. when you say "crash" do you mean actual crash & reboot? or a hang?

I was helping out a friend by reloading xp onto his pavilion ze5600 and after completeing i found that the volume control on the side will not function and was wondering if there was a way to fix that. Im sure that he wouldnt care if he even noticed but it bugs me to not know how to fix it. Im sure it is just some software or a driver that I need but I can not make it work. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks, Matt
  • jon
That's interesting. I don't use the volume control, so i don't think i ever even noticed that. Just checked--mine is working fine (i have a 5385). Have you checked on HP's site and downoaded the latest Audio Drivers? I'd try that, as well as see if they have an updated BIOS, or anything else pertaining to control panels...
