The Trip Back

The trip back was crazy rainy–typical of our trips back. At least twice i remember where we had a perfect “to” trip and the “back home” trip was bad weather. I wonder if that’s a pattern. Either way, it’s much needed rain, and a good way to end the lovely weekend weather.

tn_jaylie_hairstuck0.jpgOur girl the goofball, got a toy twisted & stuck in her hair and had to ride with it for a few dozen miles before we could stop at a rest area and remove it. she happily played with this blue plastic dangling from her hair ’til we got to pull it out.

tn_crybaby.jpgOur boy, as he had the entire trip to, cried most of the trip back–he slept about 30 minutes. It’s pretty much a crap shoot with him weather or not he’ll cry or not on a trip. With about 20 minutes left in the trip i started playing with the automatic window in the back of the vehicle on his side, and it entertained him the entire rest of the way–i wish i would have thought about that hours ago…Perhaps we would have broken the rental’s window though.

Speaking of rentals, we got bilked by our local Enterprise rent-a-car. That was my first time renting with them, and assuredly the last, as they’re every bit as much salesfolk as a rental operation. Besides–who wants to roll around with a Big Green “E” sticker on their vehicles while they’re out?

The Wedding, and reception

The wedding was great–we opted to sit in the back, due to our girl’s little problems w/ her tummy, towel in lap…my son decided to test the acoustics of the church building so i had to step outside with him & chill why my friend was in there getting wed–at least i got to see her enter, in her dress! Who knew she could wear a dress!

The Reception was a load of fun! I always trip about how i’ll have a bad attitude about doing “wedding work” (even though i knew i’d be doing this one for a beloved one who enjoys Proper Music :); when i saw the “potential audience” at the wedding I became tad nervous.

Once i got there and dropped the first song though, i was “in the zone”, and had a grip of fun. Things to remember with a wedding crowd:

1) They’re fairly “captive”
2) They’re forgiving
3) They came to boogie anyway so they’ll get up at least once, many of ‘em :)
4) They appreciate any songs that they know, allowing me to slip in some “ill hip hop” between standards

I had to remember to leave most of the “tricks” at home, but still add some finesse when i could–you know stuff like mixing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” with “Love Roller Coaster” oh so smoothly, or “Ice Ice Baby” & “Casper Slide” to move one segment of the crowd off the floor and get an entirely different one on the floor, hah. i ended the set with Tunnel Rats “TRz”, which noone there really knew, but given the atmosphere, the remaining folk still gave it a whirl.

What to do in Sikeston, MO?

so, what to do in Sikeston, MO? Nice Enough Hotel, lovely day, what to do before the 7:00p.m. wedding?

After mommy dealing with our girl throwing up during breakfast (“mommy i’m gonna frow up—blurghruwffrrrrr!”), and laying our boy down for a sec while chillen @ the hotel, we decided to find out.

Oh no. she Frew Up again, so we’re back at the hotel ’til naptime, then the wedding.

On The Road

I love it…yesterday was rainy and horrible, today is lovely! Perfect Travel Weather! It’s rare that I’ve done a road trip in inclement weather; we don’t do anything to deserve this! A Great day for taking a few pics with this film my buddy hilpert gave us to try out–it says on the film “use by Sept. ’97″…We’ll see–the last “old” batch he gave us to try out (Ilford XPI B&W) was hit & miss…I’m hoping that these come out clean.

UPDATE–took it in to Wal-Mart, and apparently i missed this–it’s Seattle Filmworks–i can only get it developed by Seattle Filmworks!! Here’s to hoping they’re still in business.

weddings, everyone goes to one :)

aight so i’m offa to a wedding–specifically i’m DJing the reception–for an old(ish;) friend. no DJ “artist” really likes to do weddings, but i’ve been a bit fortunate to be able to spin @ places where i have peers, and can put some blend finesse in the mixes. we’ll see how it goes.

i’ll leave you with this article from Rolling Stone Magazine i snarfed from slashdot about Pro Tools, album production, and the continuing changing face of music production in this century.

Move awayyy from the Code

Sitting here, learning some Swing (:p so what i haven’t written a java GUI since ’95!!), and implemented something in about 10 minutes that had taken me days before to figure out how to do…all it took was about 5 minutes in the throne room ;) to think about a different way to approach this solution, came down here and *bam*, ended up being able to nix 2 methods and corresponding lines of code ‘cos of this. It’s a simple lesson, heard time and time again, but always just so sweet when it happens…just step away from your code for a while, don’t think about it at all. when you come back to it, you’ll come fresh, and the time you would have spent trying to figure the stuff out is made up by having a fresh perspective.

What this means is that the GUI for the Jb software will be finished Fairly Soon now. it wasn’t even all that complicated–i just really needed to figure it out on my own, so i wouldn’t just learn from copy&paste (which is beneficial as well, but…).
